The Latin American School of Social Sciences - FLACSO - is an academic, regional and autonomous international institution created in 1957 by the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean with the support of UNESCO.
Mission and Strategic Objectives Our mission is to contribute, with an emphasis on the importance of respecting human rights, in the development of Latin American and Caribbean countries through promoting conditions of equity, democracy and cooperation between nations. This mission is fulfilled through the creation and dissemination of knowledge and through educational programs in the field of social sciences that uphold the highest standards of academic excellence.
Our strategic objectives are: • Be a reference point in the field of social sciences, based on the production of a high quality knowledge base on Chile and the region as well as it being relevant to our mission. • Impart lectures on a graduate and post graduate level imbued with academic excellence, following FLACSO’s mission guidelines. • Influence public policy making on issues relevant to the institutional mission.
FLACSO Network Between 1957 and 1973, FLACSO had one office located in Santiago, Chile. During that period, it created post-graduate schools in sociology and political science. As of 1973, FLACSO’s General Assembly established a decentralized model in Latin America, which resulted in the creation of today’s offices in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Dominican Republic adn Uruguay. The Secretary General’s office is located in San Jose, Costa Rica.
